Republicans just want a special election by six points in a Texas district that had been Democratic for more than a century. The district also voted Hillary by 12 points in 2016. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/paloma/the-trailer/2018/09/20/the-trailer-how-texas-republicans-beat-the-blue-wave/5ba4029a1b326b7c8a8d1596/?utm_term=.5ac9b0dab095
Republican sentiment is at an all-time high. In a separate poll Republican favorability is head of Democrat favorability (which is rare) and is higher than it's been in seven years. Last time it was this high was in 2010 when they swept the election. https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-09-24/real-red-wave-republican-sentiment-soars-record-high
Economic growth is at 4.2% in the Atlanta Fed is projecting 4.8% for the third quarter. Unemployment is at record lows. Trumps favorability has doubled among African-Americans since the election. It has also raised amongst Hispanics.
Democrat politicians have been supporting nutty policies that it's hard to believe will win votes from independents or moderates. For example they have been supporting criminals like MS 13. They have been supporting sanctuary cities which are generally unpopular. They have moved so radically left so fast that Trump tweets out videos showing Democrat leaders like Obama, Hillary, and Schumer espousing immigration policies just five years ago that are similar to trumps now.
The mainstream media is still in complete support of the Democrats, but that was true as well in the last election. The difference this time is that a large majority of the population now realizes the media is largely "fake news" and untrustworthy.
